Launching a new product OR SERVICE?

You will have a fight on your hands.

Let’s face it, its not easy for any organisation to change direction. Like a super-tanker, your teams are likely to keep on doing what they always did.

Revenue teams, in particular, are slow to engage with new products. A new product is a personal reputation risk for a business developer and it pushes them outside their comfort zone - forcing them to learn again how to sell.

What is on your PIVOT project checklist?

Have you thought of a Story plan? New product stories are hugely influential but most companies leave them to chance.

Crucial stories for a product (or service) launch are

  1. The Product Strategy story - Which include the product Insight Story

  2. The Modified Company/Product story

  3. The Product Manager’s Personal story

  4. The first Successful Client story

These stories will motivate and inspire your sales team, partners and future clients.

The Successful Pivot

NEW PRODUCT STRATEGY STORY

One of our first consulting clients is a nation-wide provider of fire warden training for operators of commercial and government buildings.

Recent high-profile terrorist incidents have given them an opportunity to develop new services in response to this new type of threat.

The CEO was concerned that his team would not be confident to discuss this new service with their clients. So in mid-2018, we worked on a service launch plan which included developing special-purpose stories to support their new-product roll-out.

The stories were:

  • A serious incident story (box) [Insight Story]

  • The story of the Threat response manager (a person with police and tactical response experience). [Key Staff Personal Story]

  • Two stories about early adopter clients - city councils that encountered threats during council meetings [Success Story]

The team has been trained to tell the new product stories and six months later revenue from the new service is far beyond expectations and the CEO believes that the threat response business may out-strip traditional fire services and secure the company’s future.
