Robin Moustaka - Associate Storyteller

I always wanted to be a doctor but ended up in nursing - although I married a doctor.

For 11 years from 1985, I worked as a nurse in San Francisco and rose to be nursing manager of more than 100 staff. When my first daughter was born I needed to be able to look after her, so I took a role in a start-up ‘nurse-on-call’ company.

The startup was developing on-call software and I really wanted to see that product succeed, so helped with the sales. That was successful and we sold the company.

I was head-hunted to join another startup, selling healthcare products on the US west coast to companies like INTEL, Wells Fargo Bank, HSBC and SONY Corp.

I got divorced at that time and really needed to be financially independent. So I joined AVAYA for higher pay, selling enterprise call centre equipment, again to companies like Wells Fargo Bank. From there I moved to CISCO selling corporate governance systems.

I married an Australian in the US and we decided to re-locate to Perth, Western Australia because he is from Geralton. The big game in Perth is mining and I really wanted to get into that. After selling for some technology system integration companies, I got a job with Motorola managing the BHP account.

A couple of years later I got my dream job offer - looking after the Western Australian Government Healthcare account for Microsoft. I loved that job and sold more than $120 million worth of products and services. I resigned from Microsoft in 2018.

These days at dinner parties, people no longer ask me to “look at their rash”, I’m more likely to be asked about protection from cyber-security threats. I spend my new life as a consultant, advising on boards and telling stories!

Mike Adams - CEO & Chief Storyteller

I graduated in Electrical and Mechanical engineer from the University of Tasmania and joined the Oil and Gas services multi-national Schlumberger in 1985. My role was to conduct electronic surveys of oil wells and I worked in the rice paddies of Java , the jungles of North Sumatra, off-shore East Malaysia and in communist China when everyone was wearing military uniforms and riding bicycles.

In 1990 I moved to London to a desk job analysing oil-well data and became a petrophysicist. In early 1996 I was offered a ‘career opportunity’ to become a salesperson and move to Norway. I did not want a sales role but Norway sounded exciting. And even though my partner, Megan, was 8 month’s pregnant with the second of our three boys, we took the challenge.

After extreme good fortune in my first year as a salesman, I had several roles in Europe and then became sales manager for the former Soviet Union countries, based in Moscow. We had a fast growing software business and it was going well but in 2002, when Chechen terrorists took 850 hostages in Moscow’s Dubrovka Theatre siege, the police barricades went up outside my office. It was time to bring the family home.

Back in Australia, I told a great story to land a job selling telecoms equipment. That led overseas again in 2007 to Malaysia, where I managed more than a hundred sales and technical sales staff across Asia for Nokia and then Halliburton in an almost identical role.

Schooling forced the next move back to Australia in 2012, this time with a job invitation to sell facility services into the mining townships and camps of remote Australia for Spotless. I navigated two more industry changes after that — selling emergency communications equipment and then industrial products — before starting my storytelling sales consulting business in 2014.

With each industry change landing me on the wrong side of a steep learning curve and with only a short time to succeed, I’ve learned the value of seeking out and sharing specific persuasive stories. Now I find stories and teaches storytelling to a client base as diverse and international as my sales career.

In 2018 I wrote the international bestseller Seven Stories Every Salesperson Must Tell.

Abby Guiyab - Associate Storyteller

I graduated in 1997 in Manilla with a Communication major. Originally I wanted to work in advertising and worked for my aunt, who was a broadcast network manager and also had a short stint with the advertising board of the Philippines.

It turns out I didn’t like advertising so much but I did like sales! I took a sales role in the pharmaceutical industry and for eight years was a quota-carrying sales person with Abbott Laboratories and eventually the multi-national drug company, Merck. I managed the product launch for Vioxx in Philippines.

I received excellent sales training through this period including Stephen Covey and Solution Selling training.

I had the first of my three daughters at this time and the pharma sales role was not at all family-friendly. So I took a job in business process optimisation in financial services. I did Credit card and Walmart Card sales but it was night shift work and I had a miscarriage.

From there I worked for Bank Assurance of the Philippines and then JP Morgan Chase bank in the risk management department. I had a second miscarriage.

I tried selling Dassault Systems software for a local value added reseller but when I was sent to Kuala Lumpur for a week while still breast feeding, I had to leave. I became a recruitment consultant for an international firm but that job involved nearly 4 hours of commuting each day and again it wasn’t sustainable for my family.

Since 2019 I’ve been working as a story consultant at The Story Leader with Mike Adams, and finally I have the sales role that I love and a work schedule that lets me look after my family!
